Crafting

Family Tradition

As long as I can remember I have be crafting with my family. My mom comes from a family of 6 girls and 5 boys and when my grandparents were alive I spent every Sunday at their house along with most of my aunts, uncles, and their spouses and children. It was a tradition that after lunch most of the men, except for my grandfather, whose activity I will save for another story, settled down for a nap while the women sat in a sitting area off of the kitchen, talking and crocheting. It was on these Sunday afternoon that I learned the chain stitch and made my first granny square.

A Family of Craftersj

Some where down the line their must have been a great artist among my ancestors. My family, on my mom’s side, is made up of so many members who are gifted in some way with their hands. Practically every one of my aunts crochet and several of my uncles are either wonderful wood workers or extremely mechanically inclined. We have a sculpter and painter, a ceramic artist, a seamtress, a scroll saw artist, a mosaic artist, and then several of us dabble in several art mediums. I am reminded of the saying “A jack of all trades; a master of none,” but I think we do pretty good.

Stubborn Me

I like to think that I can make just about anything. I know that sounds like I am bragging, but I didn’t say I could make anything; I just said I like to think that.  In fact it is so much so, that when I go to fairs, flea markets, or craft shows, I usually talk myself out of buying anything, because I think to myself, “I can do that.” Sometimes I do and other times I really regret not purchasing that item I saw.

My Crafts

I will pretty much take on any craft, but the main crafts I like to create are crocheting, sewing, knitting, scrapbooking, decoupaging, but the craft I find gives me the most satisfaction and serenity is creating mosaics out of glass, tile, and broken china. Oh, and I also dabble in painting, and jewelry making.  Woodworking is another area at which I am trying my hand. I am still very much in the beginners category, but I did make a table for my granddaughters to work on so that they can continue the long line of crafters in my family.

Simply put, I love to craft and when I see something I like my first instinct is “I bet I can make that” and then off I am to get supplies.
